چکیده

Abstract The emission mechanism for hard γ -ray spectra from supernova remnants (SNRs) is still a matter of debate. Recent multiwavelength observations the TeV source HESS J1912+101 show that it associated with an SNR age ∼100 kyr, making unlikely produce via leptonic processes. We analyzed Fermi and found extended spectrum. may represent peculiar stage evolution dominates acceleration cosmic rays. By fitting 13 SNRs GeV simple models density ratio electrons to protons ∼10 −2 , we obtain reasonable mean densities magnetic fields total energy 50 erg relativistic ions in each SNR. Among these sources, only two them, namely SN 1006 RCW 86, favor origin emission. field be comparable accelerated their has tendency increase SNRs. These results suggest rays mainly originate spectra.

Supernova remnants in molecular clouds: on cosmic ray electron spectra

The particle acceleration process at a shock wave, in the presence of the second-order Fermi acceleration in the turbulent medium near the shock, is discussed as an alternative explanation for the observed flat synchrotron spectra of supernova remnants (SNRs) in molecular clouds. We argue that medium Alfvén Mach number shocks considered by Chevalier (1999) for such SNRs can naturally lead to th...

Multiwavelength Signatures of Cosmic Ray Acceleration by Young Supernova Remnants

An overview is given of multiwavelength observations of young supernova remnants, with a focus on the observational signatures of efficient cosmic ray acceleration. Some of the effects that may be attributed to efficient cosmic ray acceleration are the radial magnetic fields in young supernova remnants, magnetic field amplification as determined with X-ray imaging spectroscopy, evidence for lar...

Shock Acceleration and γ-Ray Emitting Supernova Remnants

Diffusive shock acceleration in the environs of a remnant’s expanding shell is a popular candidate for the origin of SNR gamma-rays, as well as providing the principal source of galactic cosmic rays. In this paper, results from our study of non-linear effects in shock acceleration theory and their impact on the gamma-ray spectra of SNRs are presented. These effects describe the dynamical influe...

Constraints on cosmic-ray origin from TeV gamma-ray observations of supernova remnants

If supernova remnants (SNRs) are the site of cosmicray acceleration, the associated nuclear interactions should result in an observable flux of γ-rays for the nearest SNRs. Measurements of the TeV γ-ray flux from six nearby, radio-bright SNRs have been made with the Whipple Observatory imaging air Čerenkov telescope over the period September 1993 to June 1996. No significant emission has been d...

The primary cosmic ray spectrum in supernova remnants from very high energy γ-ray data

Supernova remnants are likely to be the accelerators of the galactic cosmic rays. Assuming the correctness of this hypothesis, we develop a method to extract the parent cosmic ray spectrum from the VHE gamma ray flux emitted by supernova remnants (and other gamma transparent sources). We illustrate the use of this technique by applying it to the young SNR RX J1713.7-3946 which has been observed...
